RecycleMania Kickoff by Sarah Lowry
For the first time in school history, Georgia Tech has officially joined the 2018 RecycleMania competition! RecycleMania is a competition between colleges and universities all across North America that aims to promote awareness about recycling and waste reduction. Schools from 45 states compete against each other for the best waste diversion rates and waste reduction results.
There are several different categories of RecycleMania, from recycling food organics to electronics to per capita waste diversion. Georgia Tech will be participating in the “Race to Zero Waste” category, which focuses on one building’s waste. We will be using West Village for the competition, and we will conduct several waste audits throughout the competition. The goal of this competition is to raise awareness about the importance of sorting one’s waste correctly and improve West Village’s waste diversion rate.
So as a student, what can you do to help Georgia Tech in the competition? RecycleMania officially kicks off at Georgia Tech on February 19. The Office of Campus Sustainability will be hosting several events throughout the competition, so be sure to check out our Facebook page and Instagram for more details. Additionally, make sure that your waste is going in the right place! Check out the signs in West Village to check what items belong in the recycling, compost, and landfill.
